There’s a lot of buzz around 5G right now. And of course, questions always come hand-in-hand with buzzwords.
So, keep reading this post for a deeper dive on what 5G is, how it differs from current mobile technology, and how it could change our lives.
What is 5G?
5G is the newest generation of mobile technology (aka the cellular data your smartphone uses to make calls, browse the internet or stream content). We currently mainly use 4G LTE, or 3G in areas with worse connectivity. In Canada, we can expect 5G to roll out sometime in 2020, although other countries may see it launch this year!
This next generation of wireless technology is going to impact our lives in ways we can’t even imagine yet. From speedy movie downloads, to more connected cities and safer driverless cars… 5G is the wireless infrastructure that we need to continue progressing with technological advances.
And great – so 5G will bring lots of technological change! But how is it actually different from 4G LTE or 3G?
How is 5G different than current mobile networks?
We can look forward to cellphone connections that are up to 20 times faster (or more) than a regular 4G LTE cellular connection today. Instant gratification will reach a whole new level with 5G.
It’s more responsive.
5G will have a lower latency time, which means your device will lag less when you’re streaming videos or gaming online. This is key since we’re consuming far more video content on our phones than ever before. And with 8k video content (extremely high resolution) on the horizon, we need highly responsive mobile networks for flawless viewing quality.
Less lagging also means that video game streaming will be higher quality and more enjoyable. You won’t have to worry about your game freezing up or slowing down in the middle of playing!
It has a stronger signal.
Fingers crossed we won’t lose cell service in the elevator or the underground subway anymore! With 5G, we’ll have improved coverage, meaning the signal is much stronger. Hopefully this means that consumers in rural areas won’t have as much trouble accessing cell service as in some communities now.
Does 5G have cons?
Possible health risks.
There haven’t been a lot of studies yet, but 5G might pose a health risk to humans. The radiation from 5G cell towers may impact your health if you live or work close to one.
However, there is no confirmation that 5G is dangerous. Time will likely tell if human health takes a hit from this new technology.
Requires new devices.
Unfortunately, the cellphone or other cellular device that you currently own will not be compatible with 5G.
Tech companies like Huawei and Samsung will likely release 5G smartphones in 2019, but other companies like Apple will probably wait until the technology matures to release their 5G smartphone iterations.
However, don’t panic! The current mobile networks will still be available alongside 5G, so you can continue to use your current smartphone after 5G launches! Check out our post here on other 2019 smartphone trends!
So, how will 5G affect me as an individual?
Overall, 5G should create positive change for you as an individual.
You’ll have higher quality experiences on your cellular devices; this includes better content consumption, more reliable cell service and quicker browsing speeds. Imagine being able to download an HD movie in 10 seconds or less!
And after the technology matures, you may even notice that 5G devices have a longer battery life! All around positive improvements on an individual level.
How will 5G affect society?
On a bigger scale, 5G is likely going to contribute to widespread technological changes in society.
Because of higher speeds and lower latency, computers will be able to communicate very efficiently. The result?
The number of smart/connected devices (ie. smart appliances) will increase significantly. We will probably see smart cities, a city that relies on communication technologies to operate efficiently, become a reality. And finally, innovations like driverless cars will be safer because they can communicate amongst each other so seamlessly.
Long Story Short
It’s exciting to see how 5G will change our lives over time! From faster smartphones to entire cities reliant on communicating technology… we’re on the verge of a new era!
