iPhone XI Max/Plus
Last year’s iPhones were a bit of a disappointment. Don’t get us wrong… they were great products, particularly the XS Max, but they brought little excitement and innovation.
Facing strict competition from the likes of Huawei, Samsung, and Google, Apple will really need to step up its game to boost declining iPhone sales. The new top end iPhone model may have a triple lens camera and a smaller notch. Will this be enough?
We will have to wait until September to find out, but hopefully Apple has some iPhone hardware and software advances that truly wow us!
Apple’s massively popular wireless earbuds, AirPods, haven’t been updated since their initial release in 2016! This is an eternity in the fast-moving world of technology.
It’s definitely time for an updated version, and the rumour mill is pointing to AirPods 2 releasing in the first half of 2019. The updated earbuds will likely feature hands-free “Hey Siri” control, better water resistance (good for working out), and better wireless reliability to name a few things.
We can’t wait for the official AirPods 2 announcement, and definitely want to be the first to order them!
What can we say about the AirPower charging mat…
For Apple’s most hardcore fans, this has to be the most highly anticipated Apple accessory in recent memory. This charging mat allow you to charge your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time… all wirelessly. Talk about convenience!
Apple’s tight control over both its hardware and software means that the AirPower mat can smartly distribute power to multiple Apple devices. It also prioritizes battery health, which means your device should last longer if you use the AirPower mat!
This charging mat was announced in 2017 and to be released in 2018… but Apple missed its self-imposed deadline! However, there is some good news. Recent rumours suggest that Apple has solved some overheating issues, and the device could release in the first half of 2019. We’re hopeful, but we’ll believe it when we see it.
Apple Watch Series 5
Our favourite Apple Product of 2018, the Apple Watch Series 4 really was the best wearable ever made. It has a great screen, fantastic battery life, and awesome performance. Because of these reasons and more, the Series 5 should also be a great device.
Don’t look for Apple to re-invent the wheel; the Series 5 should have a similar look to the Series 4 just with a few software and hardware improvements.
On the software side, we’re hoping they update the Workouts app with a custom “Skating” exercise. On the hardware front we would like to see a camera added for FaceTime calls from your wrist, as this would truly feel like you’re in the future.

The Mac Pro isn’t for everyone. It’s extremely expensive and more complex than Apple’s other Macs. Where it shines is in its performance.
The Mac Pro is Apple’s most powerful computer by far, making it a popular choice for creative folks and content creators. Some people didn’t appreciate Apple’s approach to its last Mac Pro. Many thought the tech company focussed too much on the aesthetics. So, now the focus will be more on what people actually want: functionality and modularity!
Apple is taking time to make sure things are done right. The last major Mac Pro refresh was in 2013… hopefully good things will come to those who wait.
Rumours are that Apple’s cheapest iOS device, the baseline 9.7 inch iPad, will get a refresh in 2019. The device may sport a slightly larger 10 inch screen, better camera and improved processor.
Furthermore, Apple may finally refresh the iPad mini, for the first time since 2015.
These iPads aren’t necessarily the most flashy or exciting in Apple’s lineup but they are VERY important. These are popular devices in schools as they are more affordable and accessible than Apple’s laptops and premium iPads Pro. Apple must be using a “get them while they’re young” user acquisition strategy!
Apple’s entry into the smart speaker market was less than stellar. Combining a high price point and an inferior AI assistant did Apple no favours as it struggled to steal market share from both Google and Amazon.
Sure, the HomePod had arguably the best sound, but it just wasn’t enough to convince people to buy in. We’re hopeful that Apple gives it another shot in 2019 and introduces a HomePod that is more affordable, smarter and still sounds great!
Apple Premium Over-the-ear Headphones
With the massive popularity of AirPods, Apple might be entering the world of premium over-the-ear headphones. Apple already has the Beats line, which it purchased in 2014, but the company seemingly wants Apple-branded headphones.
It seems like all major audio brands are announcing new headphones recently… even Sonos just recently announced its intent to ship headphones. We are interested to see how Apple’s attempt turns out.
In 2018, Apple released iOS 12, its 12th major iteration of its mobile operating system. The tech company put a major focus on stability and performance improvements in iOS 12, since it was no secret that iOS 11 was a disaster for Apple.
iOS 11 was buggy, unreliable and just overall lacked the polish that Apple was known for. Apple must’ve known how quickly that public opinion can sway, which is why they focused nearly all of their efforts into making sure iOS 12 worked properly.
Because of this approach, iOS 12 was a little bit boring, with very few exciting NEW features or innovations, but we will definitely give them a pass considering the circumstances. Group FaceTime was a nice addition, as well as grouped notifications and Screen Time. But, we are really hoping for a nice infusion of excitement from the release of iOS 13 later in 2019!
Apple Streaming Video Service
Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Go… these are the big names in the streaming video space. Apple looks to join a crowded space with its own streaming service, hopefully releasing in 2019.
The tech giant is investing billions of dollars into content for this initiative, proving how serious about this they are. Knowing global smartphone sales are plateauing, Apple’s focus will shift to its services. It will be interesting to see if Apple charges a monthly fee for this streaming service, or if it will treat the service as an incentive for people to purchase more hardware and give it to Apple users for free… maybe that’s wishful thinking, but we can hope.
Apple recently announced that they are allowing AirPlay streaming on certain Samsung, LG, Sony, and Vizio TVs, which means the streaming service could release sooner rather than later.
Apple News for Canada
Apple News is finally coming to Canada! With the imminent release of iOS 12.2, Apple will finally release its popular news curation service to Canada. Americans have been enjoying Apple News since 2015, so it’s about time we get our turn!
